Oh, conventions happen everywhere! And they really vary in theme and degree of seriousness.

Florida is home to a number of good ones, or so I am told. I've never made it to the opposite corner of the US!http://containment.greententacles.com/tags/academic/
On that page, you will find a link to the pretigious academic,
International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts held yearly in Orlando Florida. It's a bit more serious, academic and literary than the conventions I've been attending lately.

http://www.locusmag.com/Conventions.html
That link goes to another listing of conventions.

If you enjoy SF and fantasy and if you'd like to mingle with other readers, with artists, costumers, film makers, book sellers and even writers, then conventions are wonderful weekend getaways.

And who couldn't use one of those now and then!

I never knew about any of the kinds of conventions that you have mentioned so far, I will certainly need to find a way to visit some! Well, when they get around to visiting Florida anyway. :) I can't really make it all the way up to Washington and Oregon, as much as I'd like to! ^-^

Hope you have a great time!
